A Woman is Not A Woman traces the mermaid myth from the decapitated statue in Copenhagen to one of the earliest sightings in 1653, the first published account by a European in Korea, where women have been deep sea diving for centuries. Disparate threads overlap into contact and a decolonial research emerges. What is always a woman and never a human? Performance, found footage, diary and translation diffract the representation of history and the construction of the singular Western human. A worker holds her breath, a mermaid loses her head, a symbol accumulates across centuries. Lean in to nowhere.
