excerpts

밤시각 Night Vision is a meditation on shamanism, diaspora and the borders of body and state. In South Korea I traveled to the matriarchal island of Jeju and the Demilitarized Zone inspired by two family stories of transgression spanning a century: my great-grandmother, who lived as a shaman under the Japanese Occupation when the practice was outlawed; and my uncle, who drove his motorcycle across the 38th parallel to North Korea in the 1990s. Following reports that endangered tigers (a shaman spirit god) may live in the preserved ecosystem of the DMZ, I performed the animals’ gestures at the border, in hopes of connecting to them. Filming with an infrared night camera, a glitch appeared in my footage repeating and layering scenes, making figures seem to double, to fly. With this accident, I was transposed as a tiger across the most guarded military landscape in the world.
